I share my life with several animals, including four rescued dogs, a purebred German Shepherd, two quarter horse geldings, and six donkeys. These donkeys hold a special place as they offer therapeutic companionship with their curious and affectionate nature. Despite being historically viewed as work animals, donkeys have a unique ability to alleviate our emotional burdens. Additionally, I am surrounded by wildlife like red foxes, hawks, and eagles in my daily life.
Having grown up in a dysfunctional and emotionally cold environment, I sought solace in animals for their unconditional love. Even creatures like Texas fire ants became my friends, displaying unexpected kindness despite my challenging circumstances. Animals have consistently provided me with support and companionship, helping me navigate my own shortcomings.
Nurturing animals taught me the importance of caring for another living being, a lesson that was lacking in my upbringing. In a family marked by taking rather than giving, I found solace and connection through animals, compensating for the absence of nurture in my childhood. This deficiency in maternal love created a cycle of emotional hardship that persisted over generations.
As an adult, I turned to rescuing dogs from neglectful environments, immersing myself in their care to address the neglected child within me. Through rescuing over 400 dogs, I found healing and redemption, breaking free from the cycle of neglect that plagued my past.
The randomness of the mistreatment these dogs faced struck a chord with me, highlighting the lack of choice and voice they had in their circumstances. This sense of injustice fueled my advocacy for animal welfare, giving voice to the silenced suffering that mirrors my own childhood experiences.
My journey with animals has empowered me to speak out against animal cruelty and advocate for those who cannot defend themselves. Through nurturing and caring for abused and neglected animals, I found a sense of purpose and healing that transcends my past traumas.
My bond with my Border Collie, Echo, during her recovery from surgery underscored the stark contrast between her vulnerability and my mother’s emotional detachment. Despite the emotional wounds of my past, I effortlessly provided comfort and care for Echo, a stark reminder of the nurturing love that was absent in my upbringing.
Through my experiences with animals, I have learned to love unconditionally, to empathize deeply, and to cherish the reciprocal bond between humans and animals. They have shown me the importance of giving selflessly and embracing love in its purest form.
If you have found healing through animals or are seeking solace in their presence, I welcome you to share your stories. The transformative power of animal companionship knows no bounds, offering endless opportunities for healing and connection.
